If you’re in the mood for some really good barbecue (or fresh island fish) and don’t mind a little drive, Brian and I recommend heading up to Waimea to check out The Fish & The Hog.

True to their name, the restaurant offers meat and seafood (one person can dig into slow-smoked ribs or brisket while someone else orders fresh fish tacos or a plate of fish and chips), and is known for hearty portions, comfort-food sides (the cornbread is a favorite), and a full bar if you’re in the mood for a cocktail or a local beer.

It’s a relaxed place, but popular: no reservations, so I suggest going a little on the early side, especially on weekends, since they do get busy and usually a line forms before opening.

They’re typically open Thursday through Monday, around lunchtime through the evening.

I like to pair a visit with a day trip to Waimea: a hike in the morning or a visit to the farmers’ market, followed by an easy dinner before heading back to Kona. It’s a nice change of pace from town, and the drive itself through the pastures and rolling hills is gorgeous.

If you’re staying at Pau Hana or Pono and craving something a little different than the Kona staples, The Fish & The Hog makes for a fun outing.
